Tres’ mal.

July 9, 2006

Forget Trezeguet missing the penalty. Forget Zizou being sent off on a ghetto foul. Keeping was the difference, and my caveat posted here earlier rang true. Zidane was clear and square and had a great header on goal that Buffon sent flying over the top post. Matzeratti’s similarly struck header went whizzing over Barthez’s head. ABC’s dumbasses chose Cannavaro for “Man of the Match” but that’s just ridiculous.

Both sides showed their strong defense, though France really had the better attacking play. Henri had some beautiful runs however Italy closed on him so fast. One wonders about the tactic of having him alone up front. This renders Cissé’s injury more important; not only did that influence Zizou’s return from retirement, it would have likely had two strikers up top. We don’t know if that would have changed the outcome, however Ribery and Henri would certainly have not had to run so much.

Trezeguet’s miss was just by centimeters. In light of the drama involving Zizou, the miss will be a footnote in World Cup lore. Misses happen. However, Henri, Ribery, and Viera were all subbed out, Trezeguet probably wouldn’t have been in the game to miss it. Not like he’s a horrible player, he isn’t. He just isn’t one of those three.

Zizou’s “whachu say about my momma” moment was quite inexplicable. People are going to recall this like they do Maradona’s “Hand of God” goal. The consequences were obvious to all of us, yet apparently not to one of the best to ever strap on boots. Hope if felt good. Y’all should know, Zizou is from the hood. He’s always had a reputation as one who likes to scrap, despite all the praise that’s been heaped on him by our US announcers as elegant, etc. Remember that like a lot of the pro athletes here you all complain about as being thugs, etc (I’m thinking of one fleet footed cornerback playing for the Titans) many players on the pitch here grew up in slums, and found football as a way out.

In the end, France didn’t lose the game, Italy won. They made their PK’s, they played great defense, and France’s goal came on a questionable PK. It was a good match that however leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

So . . . that’s all I have to say about that.

Thanks for the comment over at my blog. I was glad to see that Italy won after France was awarded the PK on a bad call. That just seems to me to be the story of this World Cup: The officiating. That’s damaging to the game when on such a public stage the referees ate the story.
