It’s Bloody English! What do you expect?

October 19, 2006

I really can’t stand Tiki Barber. He and his annoying brother went to UVa and occasionally made UNC defenses seem pourous. I hate his stupid shufflin’ buck commercial for the sattellite TV service. Yet, as Psychick sometimes reminds me, I’d probably like him if I actually knew him. He’s considering retiring from football, ostensibly to do more shufflin’ buck commercials and enter the color commentary game. Apparently, he is also a Republican shill. The world does NOT need another Lynn Swann.

However, it appears someone is conspiring to make me like him. Why? This quote regarding his future as a sportscaster.

“He has all the potential in the world to be a successful broadcaster,” Liebner said in a telephone call from his New York office. “They are not going to pay him $4 million. That’s a lot of money. We don’t know how much he’ll earn. He has so much style and he is so well spoken.”

my emphasis.

Will there ever come a time when African American men with a COLLEGE DEGREE are not given Scooby snacks for being able to string together a few sentences?

I refer you to Michael Irvin’s weekly performance on ESPN’s Sunday Countdown for comparison.

Did Irvin ever get a degree?

Touche. Even if he did, it would have been from Miami.

I hate the “groomed and managed” aspect of Tiki (always contrasted with the “more easy-going” (do they mean “more what we expect out of famous black athletes?) Ronde. Everything he does seems so calculated.

I’ve heard that he is more interested in morning TV than in color commentary. He’s more modeling himself on the Gumbels and Philbin than Swann — because that’s where the bigger money is.
