White MCs egotrippin’
I’ve been watching with some interest egotrip’s White Rapper show (you thought I wasn’t?) I’ve been considering a post about it however I think I might turn those thoughts into an article for publication instead (comparing the show with the Afro-punk documentary). Since that will be more a think piece type thing I can talk a bit about the specifics of the show. Thing is, nothing really stands out so far. I’m probably far less annoyed by John “Ghetto Revival” Brown than most people watching. I actually find the Far Rockaway Queen Persia the most annoying so far. She’s so hood? I guess . . . . Search is from Far Rockaway, too, so . . . . He’s aged pretty well, hasn’t he?
It’s interesting that the participants (contestants?) are being forced to take Black Awareness 101 and Hip Hop History classes (via some goofy games). There are some Black MCs who could stand to sit in and take notes, ya know. I’m sure there are plenty of Black MCs who would love to take notes from Brand Nubians. Then again, there are plenty who haven’t heard any Brand Nubians’ stuff.
I don’t know that any of these kids are likely to sell any discs. Maybe the painfully earnest Jus Rhyme could hook up with a good DJ and attract the Def Jux heads. Sham and Sullee are the most accessible. I dunno, I’d have to see them live to really be able to tell. Misfit missed her myspace moment, do people still care about Sovereign and MIA anymore?
Anxiously awaiting egotrip’s Asian Rapper Show.
