VaTech shooting: The view from abroad

April 17, 2007

I don’t generally comment on tragedies like this. Though it appears the Kampus Kopz there have some explaining to do regarding their handling of the situation, we can grind our axes later.

I hope people noticed the ugly speculating regarding the assassin and his background or identity. I really questioned bringing up the Little Dork in this environment in the country. Hadano started to look pretty good. Again, not much to say on it now, however I wont forget. I’d prefer not to act as a tragedy pimp, like some, prattling on about conceal carry weapons and immigration, stirring up sh*t before the bodies were even cold.

The UK news outlets are running with some . . . interesting speculation regarding the motives behind the murders. Compare with what we read and hear as the week progresses.

Daily News: “Jealous Lover Killed 32 . . .”
Telegraph (AU): “Was Gunman Crazed . . .” Contains eyewitness account from the first shooting.
Japan Today notes that it’s “easy” to buy guns in Virginia That said, the Nagasaki mayor was shot by a suspected yakuza.

Our campus cops make $8/hr and tuition waivers. They don’t carry guns. They have no formal police training at all. These are just big guys who are willing to walk around unarmed in a rough neighborhood and occasionally unlock a building in exchange for finishing up their college diplomas. I can totally understand why guys like these aren’t the most effective group of first responders.
