Rasmussen reports Fred Thompson is enjoying the “I just announced my candidacy” bounce in one of the latest polls regarding the ’08 Republican presidential primary. He’s come up to tie Giuliani, which the pollsters see as impressive.
I’m not that awed. Not only is Fred enjoying the “here I iz” bounce, he’s rolling on a wave of constant free media. Right now, in a field of candidates where there isn’t much interest, ol’ mossy face is the story. He is, after all, a minor celebrity. We love reading about minor celebrities. Few journos are asking any serious questions about what “is” is, rather, as Washington reporters have been want to do of late, just want to hop on the bandwagon.
I’m quite pleased to see the GOP members, awash in desperation for a savior from what is to be a crushing defeat in ’08, fall for the okey-doak. Yes, please by all means dump the one guy who stands a fighting chance next year. Rake him over the coals for beliving in the right to choose (or at least following the “letter of the law”). Ignore that, through his position as the figurehead in the aftermath of 9/11, is the one person who might be able to spit shine polish on the turd that is the Iraq War without sounding ridiculous. No, go right ahead, jump on the bandwagon of the fake conservative. Hai, dou~zo!
