The Best Democracy That Money Can Buy

March 20, 2008

The NY Times political blog breaks a story today noting that a group of well heeled supporters of Sen. Clinton have offered to pay for a re-do in the Michigan primary.

Considering that all involved know that Dem party and government officials have all but written off a new primary as undoable, my guess is that the move is mostly a PR ploy to suggest Sen. Clinton is for fairness and Sen. Obama is against democracy.

However, most voters are going to view the story in the light I cast it in this post’s title, that rich people can manipulate the political process at any time — old time politics, not the politics of change, etc. Perhaps not the best play.

Desperate times and dire straits.

While we’re talking about the Senator from NY, note that few others are.  Obama, for all his troubles, has dominated the news cycle this week. HRC can’t get a word in edgewise. The Clinton team hoped people would be talking about Wright and Obama, however I don’t think they expected a near total media shut out.
