Grammy Thoughts (Besides “Yawn.”)

February 9, 2009

Were there any surprises among any of the winners? I don’t recall a single one. I suppose some will think Adele beating the Jonas Brothers was a surprise . . .

Interesting thing about Adele’s win for best new artist; the talented young singer who should have been accepting that award had just finished singing with Kayne, Estelle. I recounted in one of my (now archived) reviews for The Tennessean Estelle’s rather caustic comments about R&B stardom in the UK. She was a bit peeved that singers like Duffy and Adele (and of course Winehouse) were being presented as the new stars of the genre and thought they were only being propped up because they are all White. She has a point I think in that since everyone was looking for a new Winehouse last year, labels were thinking marketability as much as talent (as they usually do). Thus the push for Duffy and Adele.

Duffy is dreadful. I do not get the raves for her record, except perhaps for critics’ constant race to be first and discover the next trend (the debacle that was Tigarah, billed as the next MIA before Tigarah even signed a deal, is a prime example). Adele is actually a very good singer. She is much more a pop singer than she is an R&B singer, though she is retro, recalling some 60’s British pop.

One thing the awards show exposed last night was how terrible these pop stars are at singing live. The Jonas Bros singing with Stevie Wonder was hilarious; not the idea of it but the execution. They missed every note they tried (Stevie sounded a little tired, too). Miley Cirus, bless her Asian hating heart (lol) was making those faces when she was singing like she was just killing it, but she never hit a note.

Auto-tune is a crutch. If athletes can’t take steroids, then the Auto-tune should be banned.

I didn’t like the forced connection between the Rat Pack and the “Swagga Like Us” performance. That was a Dean Martin tribute? Still, that was pretty hot.

Was Jenifer Hudson singing live? I wasn’t sure.

Last, and least, Chris Brown, poster boy for all that is good and right with the world is facing down felony assault charges. The LA Times reported that Brown was booked on charges of making “criminal threats” but witnesses say the victim, alleged to be Brown’s SO Rihanna, had visible injuries.

A reference to the photo circulating that had her and friends making the “slant eye” gesture.

I missed a lot of it…how was the MIA, Little Wayne, and whoever else performance.

I saw the Jonas brothers and Stevie Wonder. I could barely watch it. I couldn’t believe Stevie humbled himself and appeared with them.

I’m pretty sure Jennifer Hudson was singing. She really is that good..she was pretty good on American Idol; she’s got the chops.

I’m trippin’ on the idea of a Blues Grass singer and an older school rocker winning best album. Have you hear it? I haven’t, but apparently now Allison Krauss is the female artist with the most Grammy wins.

The “Swagger Like Us” performance was pretty good, though they tried to make it look “rat pack-y” by turning the picture from color to black and white. The whole “rap pack” thing was typical corny grammys; though in their defense The Rat Pack concept has appealed to all your major big willy style rappers.

I still say Black Milk’s “Losing Out” is the rap song of the year.

Music critics have been jizzing over the Plant/Kraus record even before it was released. It’s the kind of concept that appeals to us, and given the talent involved it was a no miss. I would have been really, really shocked had they not won record of the year, not necessarily because I think it was deserving. Me, I’d still prefer to listen to “Ten Years Gone” but I’m a retro type of dude. 🙂 Krauss, I guess living down here and being close to music I thought they (union station ) were really huge, and they have won many Grammys, but I found out they haven’t had a #1 on the country charts.
