Tennessee Republicans Snatching Defeat From the Jaws of Victory
Jah bless their little stone encrusted hearts, the Tennessee Republicans. Given the choice of having a Republican leader of the General Assembly or getting a little payback on a wayward soldier (Speaker of the House Kent Williams) they chose to push a stick in old Kenny’s eye and kick him out of the party.
I suggested that Robin Smith take the statesman’s way out of the mess her party was in by not giving Williams the boot, but of course I was secretly hoping she would ex-communicate him. At the very least, they would have the Speaker’s ear, if they couldn’t count on his support they could count on the fact that they could hold his feet to the fire a bit.
Now they won’t even have that opportunity. They’ve driven him right into the arms of the Democrats (Williams was spied going to have a bite to eat with Jimmy Nafieh right after Smith made her announcement). Williams won’t become a Democrat, he’ll become an Independent claiming Republican bona fides. This means the GOP won’t even be able to run a candidate against him in the primary. He’ll be on his own to raise money and run a reelection campaign, but for frack’s sake he’s the bloody Speaker of the House. Looks good on the resume’, no? (Kleinheider makes a cogent point about the nature of East TN Republicans, btw)
Bet money the Democrats will get someone to run in that race to siphon votes away from the Republican and allow Williams a clear path.
I’m guessing Williams is there to stay, and will likely remain Speaker until the Dems mount a sufficient campaign to take back the House and install one of their own. He’d also be able to caucus with the Republicans if he so chose, and they chose to have him, but it appears as if he’s staying away and the caucus is keeping him at arms length.
I love to say I told you so. These wankers are off their nut, and the lead nutbag Rush Limbaugh is still runnin’ thangs. He blustered about how great it was for Smith to boot the traitor. There was no great principle they were standing for here except the principle of political servitude. It isn’t like he voted for a state income tax (but hey Kent, since you’re speaker, I know of a way to help get the state a little extra scratch). They got outflanked by Nafieh, shrug it off and move on. But noooooo, they gotta carry a grudge and teach Williams a lesson (that he won’t learn once he’s back in the House)
The Republicans most of them still don’t seem to understand the many reasons they lost so many races this year. Of course, they won a lot in Tennessee. Looks like the Tennessee Republicans snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
