Stuff White People Like
The suddenly extremely popular haha funny “because it’s true!!!!!!!!!!” blog.
Apparently, one thing that White people like are blogs about what White people like.
It’s occasionally amusing, if just by virtue of the topics it choses. In fact, many topics could just go without commentary and be funny by their mere mention. I mean, that’s basically what the Def Comedy Jam comics usually do. “Damn, White people sho’ do like coffee, don’t they? Damn! They be drinkin’ it like this.” [imagine hee-larious demonstration of random White person drinking coffee].
I would say that rather than being called “Stuff White People Like” it should be called Stuff upper middle class, college educated, 21-40 year old, liberal White people who frequent blogs like. Where’s the NASCAR jokes? George Bush? Larry the damn Cable Guy? This isn’t just a commentary on culture, but on class and politics.
Also missing: Adopting Asian Children.
Which is surprising given that on the blog, the among most commented on posts are Japan and Asian Girls. (And, rather inexplicably, Mos Def).
Also missing: Duke University
I predict there’s a book deal evolving out of this . . .

Mark, you know that some “white people” just aren’t white enough. The white people they are talking about used to be called WASPs until they all became Buddhists.
Yeah, I suppose. I still sense an anti-liberal bias but sure, WASPs who go Peace Corps.
Yes, the overarching thesis (veiled under the slippery signifier “white people”—frat guys at Wrigley Field getting lumped in with Prius-driving Times readers) is essentially that liberals are hypocrites. How zany and refreshing—just like Sarah Silverman!
Also missing: Rush Limbaugh, Libertarianism, The Founding Fathers, The Term “Non-White,” Golf, Movies That Portray the White Guy as the Underdog.
I see it also as humor intended to point out some of the real disconnects between what “upper middle class, college educated, 21-40 year old, liberal White people who frequent blogs” say they believe and what they do. They denounce racism and yet culturally appropriate like crazy and see nothing wrong with it.
On the other hand, if it’s meant to truly confront those kinds of issues, it’s too subtle. The demographic being mocked often laugh when they’re the butt of the jokes because they think that’s “somebody else.”
Here’s a hint: the writer of the site is making fun of himself.
That’s certainly what he’d like you to believe psmith. The LA Times interview tells me otherwise.
“Too many white people don’t like to be reminded that they’re white. They like to think that white people are those evil corporate right-wingers or the uneducated masses who vote the wrong way. But ‘enlightened whites’ are white people too and have just as much of a group mentality as they think the red staters have.”
Here, he’s clearly separating himself from the “enlightened whites” by his use of the Ironic Quotation Mark. He might say that he makes fun of all the ‘stuff’ he likes but ‘stuff” is not really his target, is it?
He’s not laughing with you. But that’s okay with me. I’m not you.
This is much funnier and “real.”
